How to Transfer the Pattern

Using scissors, trim away the excess paper from your pattern leaving about a half inch border. Trimming away the excess will make it easier to conform to the pumpkin's shape. Attach the pattern to the pumpkin with tape or straight pins.

Next you must transfer the design to the pumpkin by poking small holes through the paper stencil into the pumpkin. Using a poker tool poke holes following the design lines on the paper pattern. You just want the tip to poke through the paper and into pumpkin skin. Make sure all the lines have been traced by the poke marks before removing the pattern. On simple designs you can make the dots farther apart, but for detailed designs, place the dots close together.

Now remove the pattern and rub some ordinary flour over the design to make the dots stand out. Now you are ready to carve your design.
